The Start of Hayden's Big Boy Bedroom

It's been a year and a half since moving into our house. When we bought the house, we had the main rooms painted a more neutral shade of tan/khaki from Sherwin-Williams called Beach House. It helped lighten up the rooms, plus it got rid of the lime green living room, the dark maroon and yellow walls of the family room and it helped make the house look more cohesive. There were several colors going on in the house, plus about three different wallpapers. So far, we only have one wallpaper left in the downstairs bathroom, but it's growing on me.

Unfortunately, Hayden and the girl's rooms are still the same colors since moving in. Hayden's room has two shades of dark blue which cause the room to look extremely dark. Since there is only one small window and it doesn't receive the most sunlight, his room needs to be lightened up either by paint or some lamps. Even his overhead light barely helps. The girl's room has teal and bright purple walls, which Taylor loves. Ugh! It looks like it should be covered in teeny bopper posters. Just not my cup of tea.

So now that we have lived with the rooms for the past 18 months, it's time for a change. Plus, as my friend Chris the real estate agent tells me, it would be better to have the paint toned down (that's an understatement!) for resale purposes. And I completely agree with her.

Now, what colors should I paint? First, I scoured all the blogs like Ohdeedoh which is a haven for kiddie design and all my other favorite home design blogs. I found inspiration through a lot of photos, plus I have my own idea of what I want. I do not want a theme-y type room, meaning Disney character bedding or Spongebob paraphernalia everywhere. I want something that he can grow with, although he'll be 5 years old when we move.

I took a trip to IKEA yesterday and found his bedding and some bed pillows. I also found a great floor lamp and some picture frames for his wall. I also had to buy him a small dresser since the poor guy is sharing drawer space with me. It's time for his Thomas the train underpants to have a home of their own. IKEA is probably the best place to buy inexpensive furniture and supplies and stay within a budget. I am going to try to make the rest of the decor for his room, such as making my own art prints with Photoshop Elements and using things around the house that I already have. I can be crafty with a computer, glue and paint.

Once I start on the room later this week, I'll start posting photos. Let's hope I make it into something he likes. Already, he told me he wanted his walls green, his favorite color. Hmmmm....not sure about that one, buddy!
