Our Yard Guest

Mr. Snake in Hayden's pocket!

Last week while Greg was moving some old lumber to the side of the house, he came across an itty bitty little snake slithering it's way up the house. Of course, all the kids started in with "Can I hold it?" to "Is he slimy?" to "Is it poisonous?" Hmmm...well, I guess we should check on that poisonous thing, especially since our back swamp...errrr...conservation area is full of things that would eat small dogs. After a search through Google images of snakes, we found that our little yard invader was most likely not poisonous. But incase it was, our local hospital just eight miles down the road was the leader in the area for poisonous snake bites. Good to know!

We decided the little guy could emerge from his temporary tupperware home (which I'm really hoping Greg threw away and didn't just wash and put back in the cupboard) and the kids would be okay to hold him. Taylor did great with him, or her (don't want to assume it was a boy snake), but then again, she's my bug girl. Riley did exceptionally well, and was very calm. Hayden did pretty well, although he kept trying to ball the snake up in his hands. That's when Mr. Snake said "No more!" and started doing his striking pose. But at the size of an earthworm, he really didn't have much scare in him. I think Hayden thought it was funny!

Greg finally let him go through the fence so he could head out to the swamp and probably become food for the bigger things out there. We did have to warn the kids NOT to pick up snakes without us around, actually without Greg around. I'd probably run and scream like a banshee if I saw a big one.

The first time I saw a little snake like that was in nc. Dh parked the car and it was caught in the tire. Poor thing was sun bathing on the drive way! We didn't squish it or anying.. I just picked him up and he looked so smiley, I tapped it's nose then put him in a sunnier place where he wouldn't get stepped on. I had never seen a snake in my life before then!
