Our Patriotic Girl

LOOK! That's Taylor at the microphone!!

Yesterday was Taylor's Leadership Assembly for the Lower School at Hampton Roads Academy. The PK-5th grade students participated in a Veteran's Program showcasing patriotic songs and speaking parts from all the students. Even Taylor had a short part talking about the American flag.

We ended up leaving Hayden with a friend since I knew he would be too much to handle. Riley came along, but ended up napping through the program. One of Greg's lieutenants came along to watch the program, as there were also several other members of all branches there. The kids marched up to the stage singing some songs. When the speaking parts started, I was quite nervous for Taylor. Images went through my head of her forgetting her part, or getting nervous and freezing on stage. But she ended up walking up to the microphone, moving it to her level, and doing her speech. I was amazed! It was a proud moment for this mom.

Once the speaking parts were over, they did a music piece that encompassed all the military branches, including the Coast Guard's song, "Semper Paratus." They asked that anyone who had any affiliation to a particular branch, to please stand during their song. Greg and his friend were the only Coasties there so they received a loud round of applause during their song.

It was a great program and was something that is becoming increasingly rare at schools. Many of the songs included "God" in the lyrics which is something that public schools seem to shy away from now. I certainly am not trying to start a debate, but it was nice to hear songs like "God Bless America" being sung by little children. It was truly a great and rewarding experience for Taylor. Enjoy the photos, although some are a bit from far away.
