A Little Light Reading
It's been months since I've written on this blog. However, rather than go into specifics and a long winded reason for why (I've been busy, doing other projects, ok, I haven't really done other projects, I'm just a procrastinator, but let's not get into that), I'll just start from now.
I started reading more, like a lot more. I usually have at least one book I'm reading, but sometimes it might take me a month to get through it (thank you my lovely children who seem to think I don't need a moment alone). I noticed everyone was talking about this new hard cover called Gone Girl. A psychological thriller that's supposed to keep you guessing. It was a pick for the book club I joined but have yet to attend my first meeting since I'm always behind on reading the picked books. I started it this weekend and WOW! It's good. It's I'll just read another chapter before going to bed and realizing it's now 1:15am and you've read another eight chapters and have be up in five hours to get the kids to school good. At the rate I'm at now, I should be finished by tonight.
Once Gone Girl is finished, I have another pile of books to go through. Since I'm currently not working and a bit financially-challenged, I've started frequenting my public library. Best place ever! I can go online and order books so that I can pick them up at my convenience. And it's free! Sorry Barnes and Noble. Why buy the cow when I can get the milk for free. Lately, I've been going to the Target book section, typing all the best selling books and others that look interesting into my cell phone, and then going home and looking them up online through the public library. I might have to wait a few days for them to become available, but it's usually not long.
I just finished The Hunger Games trilogy which was my first dystopian series. I think I might get a Ray Bradbury or Kurt Vonnegut book next. Maybe I'll finally read some of the authors my high school English teacher told me about.
Even though I love the thrillers and books about a destructive future, I am also getting into some Jane Austen novels. I never read an Austen novel, much less knew who she was, back when I was in school. But now, there are dozens of movies made from her books, and even many more dozens of books inspired by her writings. A fellow Coast Guard wife sent me an Austen inspired novel that I really enjoyed, so when Target was selling Pride and Prejudice and Sense and Sensibility for one dollar a piece from their dollar aisle, I snatched them up. They have sat on my book shelf for a little over a year, but since I have a bit of spare time, I've decided to go back to Jane Austen and read. Plus, the library provided me with some really interesting Austen-inspired novels, and it seems you really need to know who Mr. Darcy is to really understand them. So I'm off to read Pride and Prejudice and figure out the characters so that I can fully understand Price and Prejudice and Zombies. Now that should be an enjoyable book: something feminine, something scary, and a little bit of ridiculousness all in one.
